Plot

Tamil dentist Ishita Vishwanathan Iyer and Punjabi businessman Raman Kumar Bhalla each live in Delhi with their parents. Ishita forms a motherly bond with Raman's troubled daughter, Ruhi. To prevent Raman's ex-wife, Shagun, from taking custody of the girl, Ishita and Raman get married and develop a deep respect. Later, Raman's insecurities toward Ishita's old freind, Mani, cause Raman to consider if he might be in love with Ishita.

Their families and friends bond and a romance grows between Ishita's cousin, Mihika, and Raman's friend and colleague, Mihir, who is also Shagun's younger brother. They are about to be married when Ashok, Raman's former boss and the current boyfriend of Shagun, orchestrates a plot to defame Mihika and make her his wife. To keep the family's respect intact, Ishita has Mihir wed Raman's sister, Rinki.

Cast aside, Shagun seeks refuge for herself and her son, Aditya, at the Bhalla family's house, where she plots against Ishita to reclaim Raman. However, Ishita and Raman only grow closer and Shagun is thrown out of the house when her motives are revealed. Later, Shagun tries to get revenge by forging documents to gain custody of Ruhi, but her plan ultimately backfires as Aditya chooses to stay with the Bhallas.

Ishita's ex-fiancé, Subbu, becomes engaged to Raman's sister, Simmi, ending her first marriage. On the same day, Shagun kidnaps Ruhi and Aditya, and Ishita risks her life to save the children during an earthquake. The act causes Shagun to re-examine herself and turn her life around. Subbu and Simmi's engagement is called off due to his ill intentions. Raman's brother Romi, who suffered an accident which prevents him from having children, is told that his ex-girlfriend Sarika had his child and convinces her to marry him.

Ashok is revealed to be a sex offender and his marriage with Mihika ends in divorce. Ishita, who has fertility problems, becomes pregnant with Raman's child but suffers a miscarriage when Ashok tries to kill the entire family with a bomb. The couple decide to try again with a reformed Shagun acting as their surrogate. However, there are difficulties in the household as Ashok has a spy among them, which turns out to be Sarika, and the child she claimed to be Romi's was adopted from an orphanage.

Ishita finds the real parents of the 'orphan' but, through circumstance, accidentally kills the father and is convicted for murder. Raman is convinced to marry Nidhi, a defence lawyer, to save Ishita, but Nidhi is secretly out for revenge. When Shagun gives birth to Raman and Ishita's child, Pihu, Nidhi kidnaps the newborn. As Ishita tries to rescue Pihu, Nidhi also kidnaps Ruhi and fakes their deaths. Incensed over the loss, Raman impulsively banishes Ishita from the house. Before he can correct this mistake Ishita attempts suicide, leaving everyone to think she is dead, while she was actually saved by Mani.

Seven years later

After living in Australia with Mani for several years, Ishita returns to India and meets Raman who reacts negatively, feeling betrayed and angered over the loss of Ruhi. At Romi and Mihika's wedding, Ishita reveals herself to the whole family. Later, Ishita and Raman learn that Ruhi is alive and living as pop star Ruhaan. In order to win her back to the family, Ishita and Raman mend their relationship. Feeling sidelined, Shagun tries to agitate the disappointment of Pihu, who believes that Raman and Shagun are her parents. Raman and Ishita attempt to defuse this by making a match between Shagun and Mani, but following their marriage Pihu turns rebellious.

A love triangle forms as Aditya falls for Mani's niece, Aliya, while Aliya falls for Mihir. These tensions cause a rift between Raman and Mani, in the midst of which Mani vouches for Shagun, allowing her to gain custody of Pihu. Later, Aliya realizes that she does love Aditya, and as they reconcile Ishita and Raman get remarried, though they lose their final hope of getting Pihu back. After Pihu learns the truth of her parentage, Mani and Aliyah decide to leave the country with Pihu. Raman desperately goes with them, in hope of counteracting Shagun's influence.

One year later

Shagun, Mani, Aliya and Pihu have been living in Bangkok, Thailand with Raman staying nearby to keep an eye on Pihu. Shagun takes Pihu with her to Adelaide, Australia - where, coincidentally, Raman and Ishita are secretly meeting. Ruhi follows Ishita from India and explains to Pihu the sacrifices that Ishita has made for her, leading Pihu to accept Ishita as her mother. Dejected, Shagun returns to India.

Raman, Ishita and their family return home and into trouble which is resolved by Sohail, who becomes close to Ruhi, though the family do not take to their developing feelings. Ruhi is blackmailed with an anonymous MMS, revealed to be Sohail. Ishita handles the situation while Raman goes berserk. Upset with Raman's anger issues, Ishita leaves with Pihu to assist a pregnant Shagun. Raman disguises himself as Pihu's new nanny in an attempt to influence Ishita to return.

Meanwhile, Nidhi fakes her death and blackmails Mani to do her bidding. This spirals out of control and Nidhi kills Ishita's sister, Vandita, and Raman is charged with the crime. Ishita proves his innocence, has Nidhi arrested, and returns home. The family begin to prepare for Aditya and Aliya's wedding, but Aditya is forcefully married to Roshini. Aditya desperately tries to get out of the marriage, while Roshini is supported in the Bhalla home where she is aided in her IPS aspirations. Aditya and Aliya are married on the arranged day, despite legal complications which are sorted out.

Mani is presumed dead in an accident and Raman is charged in his death. As the family prove his innocence, it is revealed that Mani is still alive and the dead man was an impostor. Meanwhile, Ruhi forms a bond with Pihu's friend, Riya, and quickly develops feelings for Riya's father, Nikhil. Raman rejects the match while Ishita sides with Ruhi, creating more conflict. Later, as Nikhil's true colours are revealed, Ishita and Raman struggle as Ruhi falls madly in love with the wrong person.

Pihu pushes her cousin, Ananya, Simmi's daughter, down a staircase in a fatal accident. Simmi is outraged and demands justice. To protect Pihu, Ishita makes a false confession and is sentenced to life imprisonment, while a disbelieving Raman is left without answers. One year later, Ashok reopens the case, proving Ishita's innocence.

Two years later

A broken Bhalla family visit Budapest, Hungary for a business trip. Each family member is in their own trap, orchestrated by Simmi and Param, Ananya's parents, who have remarried. Ruhi was sent out of the company by Param and becomes their biggest competitor in the business. Aditya is struggling to save his marriage as Aliya develops a gambling addiction. Pihu has been put in a boarding school where Simmi tortures her. Raman's depression was exploited with drug abuse, to the point where he has forgotten his family and allowed Param to take over his company. While everyone believes Simmi is holding the family together, she is actually acting against Ishita and Raman's family. Ishita arrives to meet Raman, aided by Ashok who has reformed after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Everyone returns to Delhi, where Ishita tries to help Raman regain his memories while exposing Simmi and Param's misdeeds. Raman feels as if he is falling for Ishita all over again, rejuvenating their bond. However, Simmi succeeds in a new plan to make Raman hate Ishita. At a business function, Raman wins a CEO award, but Pihu is kidnapped by Nikhil who is working with Simmi and Param. Ishita is lured out and apparently killed, though it is later revealed that she is paralysed. Further stressful situations cause Raman to have a seizure, and Simmi convinces Papajee that Ishita is the source of the stress - and Ishita is warned to stay away or Raman could die. With the help of Shagun, Ishita disguises herself as a maid in order to be with the family, while also trying to gain Simmi's trust. However, Ishita is exposed and thrown out of the house by Raman.

Simmi frames Aliya for the murder of a money lender, in order to force Ishita to sign divorce papers. Mihika, who has been brainwashed by Simmi, decides to marry Raman. Ishita learns that the money lender is alive and working for Simmi and Param. She tries to stop the wedding but is restrained, and nobody can find her. However, after the ceremony, when Simmi opens the bride's veil, she finds it is Ishita who has remarried Raman, having tricked the money lender. It is also revealed that Mihika was Ishita's loyal accomplice in defeating Simmi and Param, who are ousted from the family and business. Ishita enters the Ballah house as the bride with much celebration, and slowly convinces Raman.

It is later revealed that Ruhi was molested by Nikhil, but kept silent due to Simmi's threats. Ishita gets Nikhil arrested and Raman remembers that Ruhi is her daughter. Later, Ishita exposes Param and he is thrown out of the house but he goes to stay with Iyers because of Bala's debt. Simmi, still being vengeful gets a woman to tell Raman that they had a one night stand and he is the father of her child. She tells Raman that he has to kill her husband. Raman tries to save his family and goes to kill Raina (the woman),Ishita goes to stop Raman. However, Simmi is also at the scene, she shoots Ishita in the head and switches the guns. Raina runs away and after some time Romi and Adi find Raman and Ishita. They take her to hospital where Raman is convinced he shot her. Ishita becomes blind and Raman wants to be sent to an asylum as he thinks he is a danger.
